Situated on five acres overlooking Suma Park Dam is one of Orange’s most significant recent build homes within the city of Orange precinct. The home displays a modern interpretation of the old homes located around inner Byng and Kite Streets with their bluestone footings and lighter coloured local brickwork.
Designed by Lynn McCaig who at the request of the owners, used concepts from Bruce Rickard’s architecture as a framework. Lynn recently retired as a state government architect. During her career, she was involved in the design and development of many public buildings including the Circular Quay redevelopment and the redevelopment of the area at Homebush into what we know today as Sydney Olympic Park.
The home was constructed by the highly regarded boutique Orange builders, Bob Lewis and Terry Parker who both have reputations for their unique and beautifully crafted homes. History will reflect the quality of their workmanship as standout artisans of their time. The home was purpose built to meet the needs of the current owners as their “forever” home; however, circumstances have dictated a move to Canberra.
Built into the fabric of this home is stone that was excavated from the site and milled by Stone Tile, Orange to form some external features. Internally, the home also features stunning fireplace which features the same stone that appears in Parliament House, Canberra. This design work was completed by Tony Ward who was also heavily involved in the design of the furnishings to create a natural palate that also showcases wood features throughout the home including Sydney red gum exposed beams and brush box flooring.
Landscape Architect, Helen Oates was also heavily involved in the design process as the owners desired for the home to sit seamlessly into the landscape whilst also taking full advantage of the views over Suma Park Dam and it’s surrounds.
Designed as a “Smart House”, you are able to electronically control the homes lighting, blinds and also the position of the north facing louvre roof which sits above a 24 metre expanse of double glazed windows, which slide open onto an Iron Bark entertaining deck.
