Make sure you have a well thought through plan for your renovation, and that you have a budget set for it based on the estimated costs of the entire project. Determine how much you are going to spend on each item needed for the renovation. Avoid impulse buying when you are gathering the materials you need. Have a list of items needed, and stick to the list. Whatever amount you have set for the item that is the maximum you should spend on it.
Take the time to find the right resources:
If you are using the services of tradesmen check them out as to what experience they have, and what their reputation is like within your areas. You may be trying to save time by finding these experts quickly and resort to the internet for a quick find but this may not be a reliable source. It is better to utilize tradesmen that have provided services for people that you know, who can give you some firsthand feedback.  Ask these people how they felt about the work completed and if they would consider them reliable. Don’t just go with one recommendation, but ask several people. You may discover that the same builder name keeps popping up, and this will be a sure indicator that there is a builder that is right for your project.
Do it yourself when you can:
Anything you can do yourself in respect to your renovations will save you money. You have to know what your limits are however, or it could end up costing you more. You may be able to take on the painting tasks, or do a good of the landscaping. When it comes to tasks that require more skills or equipment like tilling and paving projects, then leave these tasks to the professionals. You also have to consider your time constraints as well when planning your do it yourself tasks. If your time is limited then not being able to complete your jobs on time could delay the renovations, or hold up the professionals from completing their end of the work. You may find that by putting the entire project into the hands of the various experts that it will save you time and money.
