There are many things to consider when choosing a dog for your home. First you’ll have to consider energy levels of the dog, costs, and also whether anyone in your home suffers from allergies.
The fact is you shouldn’t let allergies be something that will hold you back from having a dog. Even if you live in an apartment, this isn’t a good reason to stop from being a dog owner. In fact there are some great breeds that will not only be a great friend, but even a very good protector.
There are a few questions you should ask yourself before you add in a dog to your home though. First you’ll need to figure out how much extra time you’ll have to spend with your new pet. The type of dog you get could be fine with less exercise and less time spent with them, while other breeds need a lot more time out of the house, and a great more deal of attention. If you simply don’t have the time to put into having an animal, don’t get one though. However, if you have enough time, and only travel on occasion there are places like kennels that will be able to care for your dog while you’re away.
Depending on the size of your yard, it will also matter on the size of dog you will consider for your new pet. Bigger yards, mean there will be more space for a larger breed to be able to get all that pent up energy out.
So what dog breeds are best for a smaller area of living? A smaller breed will do much better in an area where they don’t have a ton of space. However, a smaller breed like the Jack Russell, is full of energy, so though they are small, they won’t be a good choice for a person who lives in an apartment. Also keep in mind that if you pick a dog that sheds a lot you’ll have to deal with that problem. So picking a breed that is short-haired may be the best choice if you live in a smaller apartment.
What about a person who suffers from allergies?
Dogs that have a more woolly type of coat have been known to be the best choice for people who suffer from allergies. That’s breeds like Bichons, Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs or Lagottos. They don’t shed their hair, however, you’ll have to go and get them groomed quite regularly. While another choice is the Chinese Crested Dog, one that has no hair.
How about people with smaller children?
Some dog personalities may not always jive well with a younger child. However, a great choice is the Staffordshire bull terrier, they are very good with children. Golden Retrievers are another choice of a great family dog. If you do have a younger child though, you should never leave them and your dog alone together.
What about dogs for active or non-active owners?
A dog breed that works well with people who are more active would be Kelpie, Border collie, Weimaraner, Boxer and Vizsla’s. While a person who isn’t as active should seek a breed like Charles Spaniel, Pug, or Griffon.
Cost of owning a dog?
It can be quite expensive to own a dog, an estimation by the RSPCA is that it could cost you around $900 each year as a minimum. This though does include any veterinary visits and food.
Are there breeds that are less expensive?
Well in general a smaller dog is going to cost less because they eat a lot less food. Some people state that some pedigree dogs can be quite a bit more expense. Overall you may want to research the problems that can effect a breed and then decide on whether it may be more costly due to health problems.
