It can be a very emotional experience when you say goodbye to your family home. But here are a few ways that could assist in making that step easier on you.
Record your memories
Take photographs of the things you want to remember, whether it be a chair, artwork, or something else in the home that you want to always remember. Also walk through the house itself and record the room with pictures or even a video. A walk through video where you tell stories about those memories could be a wonderful way to move on. Plus it will give you something to share with your own children about the home where you grew up when you were their age.
Sort, Donate, Sift
Leaving the home where you spent your years growing up is difficult. Each room will hold something in your mind, a fond memory that pops up automatically. There is not a simple way to move on, but no matter how hard it is, you don’t have to make it an impossible task.
So decide what of the old home you will take with you to place in your new location. If you can’t take it all with you, keep a list of those things that you feel you have to keep. Make sure you ask other members of the family too because there may be something they want to keep as well.
Have a garage sale and get rid of those items you aren’t keeping, and what you don’t sell, call a charity and make a donation. It could be helpful to another family who just can’t afford to buy something brand new.
Be objective
Go through the old home, wander around, and look at each room, remember those things that you hold dear. This should be done once you’ve sold everything that will allow you to see the home in the new state, empty and ready for you to move on.
Look at the ways that a new owner might be able to spruce up certain aspects of the home you grew up in. Where they may add in a play area for their kids, or a way they could redo the interior.
Package up your past
Place all relevant information that is needed for the new owners of this home. That should include any blue prints you have, paint colours that were used in the past, and anything else they might find useful. This would include any owner manuals for those appliances that are still in the home. If you’ve made renovations in the past, include those details in the folder for the new people.
Another fabulous idea would be to give the new owners a welcoming basket. This will give them a great way to start their memories in the new house, and you a great way to say goodbye.
It will be a tough time, but making it easier on yourself is possible, use these tips and you’ll find it’s not near as hard as you thought it could be.
