Owners say, ‘law’ favours tenants
Recent changes to the Residential Tenancies Act means big fines (up to $5,000.00) for property owners, even for accidents. Some may even be fined for accidentally writing a ‘Condition’ into the Lease Agreement that breaches the Act.
Attorney General John Rau said that the penalties had not been increased since 1995. Agreements between landlords and tenants should contain clear and accurate information.
There are also other changes to the Act. Landlords face fines if they do not provide tenants with instruction manuals for appliances. Pet parents paying an extra week’s bond to keep animals.
I urge all landlords who self manage to re-think there position. Avoid unnecessary litigation and use a professional Property Manager.
